Before We Disappear
Most of us will not leave monuments behind.
Our names will fade.
Our possessions will change hands.
The world will continue without asking who we were.
But perhaps that was never the measure of a life.
Perhaps what remains is quieter.
The moment someone felt less alone because we stayed.
The breath that became easier because we listened.
The fear that softened because we were gentle with a heart that had already carried too much.
We spend years trying to become someone.
More successful.
More visible.
More certain.
More worthy of being remembered.
But in the end, the question may be much simpler.
Were we kind when cruelty would have been easier?
Did someone feel safe in our presence?
Did we leave a little light in a place that had almost forgotten how to see?
We do not need the whole world to remember us.
One life made gentler may be enough.
Perhaps we do not disappear when our name is forgotten.
Perhaps we disappear only when nothing loving remains behind.
